The ocean, the pain and passion.

35526 At the bar known as the Dinwoody. U of A campus in SUB on the second floor. I had a shoot with My Sister Ocean, my good friends and favorite, local musicians. They know they’re good, they play like they mean it. Music is so important, there is such a great bond from the music in my life. Songs are like little highway markers, pictures are little snippets of time. Together they make wonderful, colorful stories in fantastic detail.

This goal of mine, this project is all about the covenants of music and how it reaches us. I want my photos of these moments to cut the barriers of what we perceive as the proper reception of sound and have songs, thoughts, intensity and talent conveyed via an image.

There is some history for me here, as I share some of this same passion around music. My ability to play guitar, bass and drums consistently was taken from me when I developed repetitive strain injuries in both of my arms. This was caused from either excessive playing, working out the wrong way, or typing away on the computer. I think, a combination of that and my work as quality technician in an electric heating plant was to blame as well. The photos are one of the few ways I can connect with that part of my life, one of the few ways that I can convey how affective the blending of tone and rhythm are at inspiring creativity.

One of the best things I was ever told, one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever heard is that once you can convey your pain into the images you are trying to take, then you will be able to produce works of art with meaning. Clarity and technicality of photography is one thing, spirit and the wherewithal to place your heart and head on your sleeve and go for it is another. My pain, my sorrow and the loneliness that I feel because I can’t play guitar for my kids and my wife, all comes out in these pictures.

I am connected, to this thing we call song.
